If you suffer from mild to moderate depression, you may be interested in natural treatments. Even cases of severe depression may benefit from natural remedies in conjunction with medication. Natural treatments for depression run the gamut from supplements to lifestyle changes to alternative therapy. Here are some natural treatments for depression that may help.
Natural health experts generally agree that diet is important in managing depression symptoms. Some dietary changes you can make include:
Eat nutrient-dense foods. This helps make sure your body has all the vitamins and minerals it needs for proper brain function. Fresh produce, nuts, and whole grains tend to be rich in vital nutrients.
EFAs, or essential fatty acids, may help boost mood in depressed individuals. EFAs can be found in healthy oils like olive or safflower, and in fish and nuts.
Cut back on refined white sugar and corn syrup. These refined sweeteners tend to cause blood sugar spikes and slumps, which contribute to the symptoms of depression.
Eat whole foods, such as whole grains and fresh produce. This not only provides depressed individuals with much-needed, healthy carbs; it also minimizes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from the diet. These artificial substances may contribute to depression in some individuals.
Chiropractic and other Body-Oriented Treatments
These alternative therapies seem to be gaining acceptance among medical experts. Techniques like chiropractic adjustments, massage, acupuncture, and others may help relieve depression symptoms. This may have to do with improving circulation or the elimination of toxins from the tissues of the body. Other body treatments include:
Working out daily can be hard even if you don’t have depression. But it’s even more important if you do – exercise has been shown to help relieve symptoms of depression. This may be due to the ability of exercise to boost brain chemicals that make you feel happy. Exercise brings balance to your life, balancing activity and rest; a balanced lifestyle itself can be very helpful in dealing with depression.
Most sources are consistent in pointing out that exercise need not be strenuous, but that it should be regular – 30 to 60 minutes a day for 3 to 6 days a week.
A good vitamin and mineral supplement that is high in B12 and B6 is said to be good for alleviating depression. Magnesium is another mineral that tends to be deficient in many people, and that is important for proper nerve and muscle function. You may also find that supplements of evening primrose oil, flax oil, or fish oil will help your mood.
Herbal supplements have sometimes been used with success. St. John’s Wort is probably the best-known herb that may combat depression. Others include ginseng, valerian root, and chamomile. Chamomile can be drunk as a tea, as can another tasty sedative herb – lemon balm.
Always check with your doctor before supplementing with any herbs to avoid any adverse drug/herb interactions. And if you know a qualified herbalist, you can get advice from him or her, too.
Chiropractic Superior for Treating Ear Infections in Children
Many people are now turning to Chiropractic instead of traditional allopathic resources to treat ear infections in children. But the questions begs to ask, is this form of treatment and care more effective? Click link below to read more!
Are you experiencing frequent negative health symptoms like back pain, headaches, or stress? Pain medications can only do so much, and they won’t fix your problem. Chiropractic adjustment benefits more than just the symptoms, it corrects the root of the problem!
Visiting a chiropractor may be able to help you overcome some or all of your symptoms. A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor physically adjusting the vertebrae in your back. This type of procedure can have a myriad of positive benefits without the stress or invasiveness of surgery or other more intense techniques.
Is a chiropractic adjustment right for you? To help you answer that, we are going to take you through some of the top chiropractic adjustment benefits.
This study of high blood pressure published in the Human Journal of Hypertension showed that a chiropractic adjustment could give people suffering from high blood pressure the same effect as taking certain high blood pressure medications.
This study also showed that the effects of the adjustment would persist for 6 months after the adjustment.
High blood pressure medications can have negative side effects including: Fatigue, Nausea, Dizziness, Anxiety, Weight loss. For a more extensive list of negative side effects read this article in Medline Plus
If an adjustment can give safer and just as effective results as these medications, it might be something to consider.
Adjustments have been shown to help patients suffering from low blood pressure as well.
2. Chiropractic Adjustment Benefits – Neck & Back Pain
Medications and surgeries are options for this type of pain, but those can be dangerous, expensive, and ineffective.
An adjustment from Holistic Health Center of Peoria can significantly reduce your back and neck pain via a non-invasive technique. Chiropractic treatment is also cheaper than other methods of back pain management.
You’ll be able to save yourself from both mild and chronic pain while also reducing your medical costs.
3. Chiropractic Adjustment Benefits – Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition where there is an abnormal curvature of the spine. This can cause pain, abnormal posture, a reduction in your range of motion, and even trouble breathing.
Most scoliosis patients have few options for treatment. But a chiropractic adjustment has been shown to help treat scoliosis patients.
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates from your lower back down your legs because of a damaged or pressured sciatic nerve.
This type of chronic pain can lead to over-medicating and chronic pain. Chiropractic treatment can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve that is causing your sciatica. Studies show that patients receiving adjustments reduced the number of pain days they had. They also experienced a reduction in the severity of their pain.
Both tension and migraine headaches can be caused by back pain and spinal issues. Back misalignment can cause muscle tension and pain which can result in both tension headaches as well as migraine headaches.
Besides back pain, headache is the top ailment that chiropractors treat. There are over 200 studies examining the benefits and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for headache relief.
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to help increase blood flow to the brain. They can help increase the flow of cerebral spinal fluid as well. This can significantly help people suffering from neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.
While this subject is still being researched, the potential therapeutic applications provide exciting possibilities of treatment for these patients.
8. Chiropractic Adjustment Benefits – Children’s Health
Kids chiropractic care can significantly improve certain conditions that affect children. The big three conditions that can be helped with an adjustment in children are colic, acid reflux, and ear infections.
Colic Colic causes near constant crying and fussiness in young children and babies as a result of abdominal discomfort and gas. Colic can be extremely difficult to treat, which can result in an uncomfortable baby and exhausted parents.
Adjustments have been shown to help improve infantile colic symptoms.
Acid Reflux and Ear Infections It’s thought that the nerves in the brain and back along with the nerves in the gut and head are particularly sensitive. When these are affected, it can result in conditions like acid reflux and ear infections.
A chiropractic adjustment can help to improve what’s known as the gut-brain connection, which is why chiropractic adjustments might help these types of conditions.
This improvement can also boost the immune system, which can help prevent infection.
Reduction of inflammation, pain, and other similar conditions can help get the body in top shape. This is especially true for athletes who depend on their body to do their job.
Many sports teams and professional athletes hire chiropractors. Adjustments can reduce pain and tension caused by sports and activity. Alignments can also reduce inflammation and boost the immune system to help boost an athletes performance.
10. Chiropractic Adjustment Benefits – Vertigo
Dizziness and vertigo can make it impossible to do everyday tasks or even get up out of bed without feeling disoriented and nauseous. This is a common condition after experiencing a head or neck injury.
A chiropractic adjustment can help target joints and vertebrae that aren’t moving correctly. This could help reduce vertigo episodes. An adjustment can also help fix your body’s natural balance, which can also cause vertigo if it’s misaligned.
Getting a chiropractic treatment can be a great way to improve multiple areas of your health with one non-invasive treatment. Surgeries and medications can be dangerous and expensive.
With an adjustment, you could safely and easily target your problems.
Chiropractic More Effective Than Drugs for Ear Infections
Suspected ear infections or otitis media account for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States – about 30 million doctor visits a year. Is that the right thing to do? Do you take them to the doctor or is there other ways? There are finally some great studies proving other ways may be more effective.
Ear pain is the number one reason for child visits to chiropractors.
Misalignments of the spine (also called subluxations) can occur during childbirth or from a fall or tumble. Misalignments undiscovered or left untreated can irritate or inflame the nerves and can affect the Eustachian tube, leading to fluid buildup in the middle ear. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to help to restore the normal functioning of the nervous system so the body can heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.
Antibiotics, the usual allopathic treatment, are not consistently effective and often lead to a recurrence of ear infections. Studies show, the higher recurrence rate among children who took amoxicillin could be due to a depression of their body’s natural immune response as a result of taking an antibiotic in the early stage of infection. Antibiotic use in such cases may cause an “unfavorable shift” toward the growth of resistant bacteria, setting up a continuing cycle of repeat ear infections, which lands them back at the pediatrician for more antibiotics. Even the CDC says “antibiotics are not recommended to help treat many ear infections”.
A promising study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. 332 children with chronic ear infections participated in the study. Each child, ranging in age from 27 days to 5 years, was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. The results show that close to 80% of the children did not experience another ear infection within the six-month period following their initial visits.
In a recent study byICPA it concludes that Chiropractic care is MORE effective and reduces symptoms faster than traditional allopathic care.
THE EAR INFECTION STUDY
The Role of the Chiropractic Adjustment in the Care and Treatment of 332 Children with Otitis Media Fallon, JM. Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics Vol 2, No. 2 1997 p.167-183.
From the abstract: This pilot study included children from 27 days old to five-years-old, was on the effects of chiropractic adjustments on children with otitis media used tympanography as an objective measure.
Results: The average number of adjustments administered by types of otitis media were as follows: acute otitis media (127 children) 4 adjustments; chronic/serous otitis media (104 children) 5 adjustments; for mixed type of bilateral otitis media (10 children) 5.3 adjustments; where no otitis was initially detected (74 children) 5.88 adjustments. The number of days it took to normalize the otoscopic examination was for acute 6.67, chronic/serous 8.57 and mixed 8.3. the number of days it took to normalize the tympanographic examination was acute: 8.35, chronic/serous 10.18 and mixed 10.9 days. The overall recurrence rate over a six month period from initial presentation in the office was for acute 11.02%, chronic/serous 16.34%, for mixed 30% and for none present 17.56%.
EAR INFECTION STUDY CONCLUSION:
The results indicate that there is a strong correlation between the chiropractic adjustment and the resolution of otitis media for the children. Note: 311 of the 332 had a history of prior antibiotic use. 53.7% of the children had their first bout of otitis media between the ages of 6 months and 1 year and a total of 69.9% of the subjects in the study had their first bout of OM under a year of age. This is consistent with the findings of other studies.
Even though this study is not definitive and more scientific research needs to be done in this area, chiropractic treatment is a conservative, drug-less approach to consider trying if your child has a history of chronic ear infections.
A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH:
1. As long as the eardrum hasn’t ruptured, often using garlic or garlic/mullein oil ear drops in the affected ear will cure an ear infection without paying to go to either one. You can also make your own garlic-infused oil with: 1 clove of fresh garlic (organic if possible), minced 2 tablespoons of high quality olive oil or sesame oil
The fastest way is to heat the olive oil in a small pan or double boiler (preferred) and add the minced garlic. Then, keep on very low heat for about 20 minutes to let the beneficial properties of the garlic infuse into the oil. At this point, strain the garlic and remove. Let the garlic cool to just skin temperature and place two drops in the ear. The warmth and the oil often offer fast relief. Since fresh garlic is used, I make a new batch of this mixture every 24 hours if needed rather than keeping the remaining oil, since bacteria can potentially grow from the garlic.
2. For stubborn cases parents can drop a little vinegar in the ear (and then drain it) to help cleanse the area.
3. and often removing dairy from the diet helps so the mucous membranes do not feel overly taxed and this allows the child to get ahead of the infections.
If you’re going to be as productive as possible, then your diet is incredibly important to consider. Ultimately, what you eat is your main source of fuel and if you aren’t getting enough of it, then you’re going to feel low on energy. This is something that a lot of people get wrong during the day: unintentionally starving themselves of energy foods that by the time they should be firing on all cylinders at work, they’re actually starting to flag and feel listless and drained.
But it’s not as simple as just ‘eating more’. Eat too much and you can end up feeling exhausted too – as we all know from too many massive Christmas dinners and Sunday roasts. Read on then and we’ll look at how you can go about providing yourself with a steady source of energy from your diet.
Energy Food: Slow Release vs Fast Release
What is important is not what you eat or when you eat it but rather how long it takes for the sugar from that food to reach your blood.
All food contains energy in the form of calories. This includes carbohydrates, fats and proteins. What differs though, is how long it takes for the calories to reach your blood stream – which is dictated by how long it takes to absorb.
When you consume a ‘simple carb’, it essentially gets processed immediately by your body and hits your blood stream quickly. This is anything like white bread, white pasta, chocolate or sweets. The sweeter the food tastes, the purer the sugar is and the more quickly it will be absorbed.
Conversely though, when you consume fats or ‘complex’ carbs, there is more to be processed by the body. This means the sugar is extracted more slowly and is released gradually into the blood.
For the purposes of providing a steady stream of energy, this is far preferable. Otherwise, if energy is absorbed too quickly, this can cause a sudden ‘spike’, followed by an immediate crash. Essentially, the body notes the sudden increase in sugar and responds by releasing insulin. This insulin encourages the sugar to be absorbed for use in the body or to be stored as fat.
Once this happens, the brain will release serotonin, which is the ‘feel good hormone’. Unfortunately, this hormone is also a precursor to melatonin, which is why we feel sleepy immediately after. Thus, if you want to avoid a spike and a crash, the best recourse is either to have a complex carbohydrate/fat source early in the day to provide steady energy, or to subsist on smaller snacks throughout the day. This is why porridge oats, or an avocado, can make such a great breakfast choice.
How Many Energy Foods do You Need?
On top of this, try to ensure you avoid consuming more calories than you need which can lead to weight gain. Calculate your BMR (Base Metabolic Rate) which is the number of calories you will burn in any given day and then aim to consume somewhere around or just below that number to avoid a surplus.
