The Origin of the Gonstead System
The Gonstead technique was developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead (1898–1978), a mechanical engineer turned chiropractor. His engineering background led him to approach the spine with extraordinary precision — analyzing each vertebra individually rather than adjusting broadly. The result is one of the most respected and thorough systems in chiropractic.
The Five Criteria of Gonstead Analysis
1. Visualization
Dr. Lackner observes your posture, gait, and spinal symmetry from multiple angles. Changes in skin texture, muscle tone, and alignment provide the first clues about where problems may lie.
2. Instrumentation
A myoVision surface EMG scan measures muscle tension along the spine. Areas of elevated activity often correspond to nerve interference at specific vertebral levels.
3. Static Palpation
While you are still, Dr. Lackner feels along the spine for tightness, swelling, or tenderness that indicate inflammation around a subluxated joint.
4. Motion Palpation
While you move, Dr. Lackner tests each joint individually to identify which vertebrae are restricted in their normal range of motion.
5. X-Ray Analysis (When Appropriate)
When indicated, full-spine X-rays reveal the exact alignment, disc height, and structural condition of your spine. X-rays are never used during pregnancy.
Why Precision Matters
The spine has 24 movable vertebrae. Adjusting the wrong one does not help and may create new problems. The Gonstead system's five-criteria analysis ensures that Dr. Lackner identifies the exact vertebra that is subluxated and adjusts only that joint with a specific, gentle force.
