Why Nausea Can Happen After an Adjustment
Nausea after a chiropractic adjustment is uncommon but not unheard of, particularly after cervical (neck) adjustments. The upper cervical spine sits directly beneath the skull, near nerves and structures that influence balance and digestion. When alignment changes in this area, your body may need a brief period to recalibrate.
Three Common Causes
1. Vestibular Recalibration
The upper neck contains proprioceptors — sensors that tell your brain where your head is in space. When a cervical subluxation is corrected, these sensors suddenly send different signals. Your vestibular system may need a few minutes to hours to adjust, which can cause mild dizziness or nausea.
2. Vagus Nerve Stimulation
The vagus nerve, which runs near the upper cervical spine, helps regulate digestion. A cervical adjustment can briefly stimulate this nerve, occasionally producing a mild queasy sensation.
3. Metabolic Waste Flush
As with any adjustment, restoring joint motion flushes trapped metabolic waste into circulation. Your body processes these byproducts, and the process can cause mild, temporary nausea.
What to Do If You Feel Nauseous
- Sit or lie down: Give your vestibular system time to settle. Rise slowly.
- Sip water: Hydration helps your body process metabolic waste.
- Eat something light: An empty stomach can make nausea worse. Try crackers or toast.
- Avoid driving immediately: If you feel dizzy, wait until it passes before getting behind the wheel.
How Dr. Lackner Minimizes Discomfort
At The Holistic Health Center of Peoria, Dr. Lackner uses the Gonstead technique, which emphasizes specific, low-force contacts without aggressive twisting. She also uses myoVision scans to pinpoint exactly which vertebrae need attention, avoiding unnecessary adjustments.
When to Seek Further Care
Mild nausea that resolves within hours is not a concern. Seek medical attention if nausea is severe, lasts more than 24 hours, or comes with vision changes, severe headache, slurred speech, or weakness. Read more about feeling sick after an adjustment or call (309) 685-5777 with questions.
