Defining Subluxation
In chiropractic, a subluxation is a vertebra that has lost its normal position or motion relative to the vertebrae above and below it. This misalignment can irritate or compress nearby nerves, disrupting the flow of information between your brain and body. Unlike a complete dislocation, a subluxation is a partial misalignment โ but its effects can be significant.
The Three Components of a Subluxation
A subluxation affects more than just the bone. It involves three interconnected changes:
- Kinesiopathology (the joint): The vertebra is restricted or misaligned, limiting normal motion.
- Neuropathology (the nerve): The misaligned vertebra irritates or compresses nearby nerves, disrupting signals.
- Myopathology (the muscle): Surrounding muscles spasm or weaken as they try to protect the restricted joint.
What Causes Subluxations
- Physical trauma: Auto accidents, falls, sports injuries, or birth trauma
- Repetitive stress: Poor posture, desk work, heavy lifting, or repetitive motions
- Chemical stress: Poor nutrition, toxins, or dehydration affecting muscle and tissue health
- Emotional stress: Tension and anxiety that increase muscle guarding
How Subluxations Affect Your Body
Because your spinal cord carries every nerve signal between your brain and body, a subluxation at any level can affect function beyond the local area. Common effects include:
- Localized pain, stiffness, or restricted motion
- Muscle spasm and tension
- Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling (nerve symptoms)
- Headaches and fatigue
- Reduced range of motion and flexibility
How Dr. Lackner Identifies and Corrects Subluxations
At The Holistic Health Center of Peoria, Dr. Lackner uses the Gonstead system's five criteria โ visualization, myoVision instrumentation, static palpation, motion palpation, and X-ray when appropriate โ to pinpoint the exact subluxated vertebra. She then delivers a specific, gentle adjustment to restore its normal position and motion.
